Netflix now lets you share iconic clips from its shows and movies to social media

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 09:11

We've all got opinions on what the best Netflix shows are. If you're anything like me, you might find yourself going back to specific episodes or moments, because they're just that good. But it can be frustrating trying to remember timestamps or episode titles, meaning there's a little effort required to revisit our favorite moments.

Thankfully, the best streaming service has a genius new solution. They've just introduced a new feature called Netflix Moments, which calls time on the endless scrolling and simplifies finding those all-important scenes. Whether you're looking for your favorite twisted children's game ahead of Squid Game season two or you can't stop thinking about that romantic Bridgerton moment, there's now a way to fast-track the experience.

What is Netflix Moments?

Netflix's newest feature essentially lets you clip scenes from its library so they're easier for you to access. These can be saved as bookmarks so you can navigate to them to watch from that point onwards, meaning you don't need to scroll through or keep hitting the skip button.

It also allows you to share these Moments to social media, whether you want to put it on your Instagram Story or send it directly via WhatsApp. This is actually a pretty genius way to convince your friends to watch something, or just scream about that big moment none of you have been able to stop thinking about. Whatever you use it for, it's going to make reliving and sharing scenes a breeze.

The streaming service has rolled out Moments alongside a new global campaign called "It's So Good", which features some famous figures discussing those unmissable scenes. Take a look at that below.

Moments is expected to start appearing across devices very soon, and seems perfectly suited to mobiles especially due to the scene sharing capabilities. While Netflix has not confirmed an exact timeline for the rollout, keep an eye on your My Netflix tab and you should be seeing it in the near future.

Many bosses think their employees lack even basic security awareness

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 09:02

Nearly three-quarters (70%) business leaders are increasingly concerned about their employees’ cybersecurity knowledge, stating they lack even fundamental awareness needed to combat rising threats.

The news comes as companies brace themselves for increased threat activity in the age of artificial intelligence, which aids threat actors to increase the sophistication of their attacks.

The report from Fortinet cites another separate study carried out by the company claiming more than four in five organizations have faced incidents like malware, phishing and password attacks over the past 12 months.

Workers aren’t prepared for the future of cybersecurity

Looking ahead, three in five leaders expect AI-augmented attacks to make it even harder for workers to recognize threats.

However, artificial intelligence isn’t just seen as a threat to buisnesses. Four in five of the study’s participants believe that emerging AI-enhanced threats have driven greater openness to training initiatives within their companies, with three quarters of leaders planning to launch awareness campaigns.

“As threat actors harness new technologies like AI to augment the sophistication of their attacks, it’s increasingly crucial that employees serve as a robust first line of defense,” said Fortinet Chief Marketing Officer John Maddison.

In response to the changing threat landscape, companies are becoming increasingly proactive, with around one-third (34%) delivering content monthly, and almost half (47%) doing so quarterly. Almost all (98%) have covered phishing prevention, with security (48%) and privacy (41%) also frequently appearing in training.

Moreover, Fortinet’s research shows companies offering more engaging, targeted training are seeing the best results, with 89% of leaders reporting a stronger security posture after training.

As threats are becoming both more sophisticated and more common, it’s clear that cybersecurity training has become a paramount part of business. As such, Fortinet calls for organizations to consider a three-pronged approach – security awareness and training for all employees, technical cybersecurity skills for IT workers, and advanced security solutions for the network.

Lords of the Fallen is the latest game to get confirmed PS5 Pro enhancements and support

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 09:00

Developer Hexworks has announced that Lords of the Fallen will receive PlayStation 5 Pro support when the console launches next month.

According to the developer, the PS5 Pro enhanced version of the action role-playing game (RPG) will allow players to experience a "40% increase in pixel density over the base PlayStation 5 console, resulting in a sharper image and finer details."

With the upgraded Performance Mode, Lords of the Fallen will run at 4K (upscaled from 1440p) at 60 frames per second (FPS), feature shaper distant details, and refined textures on characters and environments.

Quality Mode, meanwhile, is designed for visual fidelity and will run at native 4K at a "stable" 30fps that will showcase "intricate visuals across the dual realms of Axiom and Umbral".

Hexworks added that the PS5 Pro support confirmation also comes ahead of planned updates and further enhancements for Lords of the Fallen across all platforms, but didn't go into the details.

Following Sony's official unveiling of the PS5 Pro, more studios have been sharing their plans for their PS5 Pro-enhanced games.

Last week, Arrowhead Game Studios confirmed that its popular third-person online shooter, Helldivers 2, will also receive PS5 Pro support but has yet to divulge the details on the upcoming upgrades.

Team Ninja also revealed that Rise of the Ronin will get "improved visuals" and "frame rates" on the mid-generation console, along with Remedy, which confirmed that Alan Wake 2 will receive Quality and Performance mode upgrades.

The PS5 Pro is set to launch on November 7. If you want to get your hands on the upcoming console, check out our PS5 Pro pre-order guide.

Grado's high-end headphones look like iconic 90s cans, but feature detachable cables for the first time

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 09:00

Audiophiles need no introduction to the Brooklyn-based open-back headphone specialist Grado (although do see our best on-ear headphones guide for two excellent sets – namely the high-end Hemp or the more affordable SR80x) and if the all-new Signature HP100 SE sounds familiar, you're not wrong: these new flagship headphones are a contemporary homage to the iconic Signature HP1 headphones made between 1989 and 1992, by Grado Labs founder Joseph Grado.

The HP100 SE boast newly engineered drivers and, for the first time in a Grado design, detachable cables, as well as a fresh headband assembly to complete a look Grado is calling "a new design direction" for the family-run firm. As always, the HP100 SE are hand-assembled in Grado's Brooklyn headquarters.

In recognition of what would've been Joseph Grado’s 100th birthday, Grado Labs is proudly introducing these Special Edition cans. “Although Uncle Joe left us 10 years ago, he will always be a presence at Grado Labs”, said Joseph’s nephew and Grado CEO, John Grado.

Grado Signature HP100 SE: specs, pricing and everything you need to know

Grado tells me that although the HP100 SE are based on an iconic pair of headphones, the approach here has been "from the ground up." First off, there's a completely new 52mm driver using a new paper composite cone and a fresh voice coil made from lightweight copper-plated aluminum. Honoring the heritage of the original Signature HP1/2/3 headphone designs but with a modern feel, the housings are individually machined from specially treated aluminium with the product name engraved on the face.

The HP100 SE come in space gray (and space gray only) and again, it is the first Grado model to feature detachable cables. Terminated with a 6.3mm plug, each driver housing is connected via a 4pin mini XLR plug, but the company tells me that additional detachable cable options (4pin XLR termination, 4.4mm balanced termination, plus various cable lengths) will be available in the future.

They're designed for comfort during long listening sessions, too. The new headband features 50% more padding than previous Grado designs but with the brand's trademark stainless steel height rods that can be adjusted and rotated up to 105 degrees to minimize listening fatigue.

The Grado Signature HP100 SE will be available in November from selected independent retailers and from www.grado.co.uk (UK) and www.gradolabs.com (US), priced $2,495 / £2,795 (which is around AU$4,231) and although I haven't yet had the pleasure of putting them on my ears, I think they look very interesting indeed.

Bungie shares an update on its new shooter Marathon, confirming it's still "on track" but that it's received a "lot of aggressive changes"

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 08:35

Bungie has confirmed that its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon is "on track", but says it's "a little too early" to show it off.

Game director Joe Ziegler shared the game's first development update in almost a year since it was delayed with a nine-minute video, discussing what the team has been up to and how Marathon has changed.

Although the update didn't offer a look at any new gameplay, Ziegler did reveal that over the past couple of years, Bungie has introduced a "lot of aggressive changes" to the game and has been "iterating pretty heavily" while also testing with players.

"Where the game is at right now, there is a variety of different things at different states inside of the game," the director continued. "Some things are a little bit more complete like our environments are starting to come together in a really, really beautiful way."

Ziegler adds that character models have undergone some "iterating" as well, "so they're coming together but they're not fully there yet" while enemy models are still in an "early state".

Hey everyone! We made a "little" video where I chat about what we're making on the Marathon team and what we've been up to in the dark all this time. It's not a gameplay reveal or anything, but if you're interested in hearing the latest, check it out below. Much ♥ pic.twitter.com/WaHgCADed3October 28, 2024

"It's a little early to show you all of it as one piece [...] but all of these things are on-track," Ziegler said. "They're not all together but when they all do come together, we really, really are looking forward to showing you what that looks like, especially in play."

The game director did go on to show off a sneak peek at a few images that were showcased in the background of the video, including concept art of a Runner codenamed Thief, and another character codenamed Stealth.

Ziegler went on to say that it will "reveal a lot more... in the midst of 2025", and that Bungie will be expanding Marathon's playtests next year as it looks to add a significant amount of players.

"The interest that you've shown engaging with all the content we've created... really fuels us on a daily basis," Ziegler said. "We're excited to engage with you more in 2025 and beyond as we bring this game to all of you to play."

This gamer bought 24 years' worth of PlayStation Plus to avoid price hikes

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 08:30

A dedicated PlayStation player has revealed they purchased 24 years' worth of PlayStation Plus for up to $2000 to avoid price hikes.

User 'On_Reddit_In_Class' shared their commitment on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page alongside a screenshot of their 24-year subscription, which won't expire until 2048, explaining that they will be gaming for the rest of their life and wanted to avoid "absurd" price increases (via IGN).

"I decided to stack PS Plus subscriptions until 2048 because of the absurd price increases the past few years," the user said. "I figure that I’ll probably be gaming for most of my life so it would save a good bit of money."

With another screenshot, the Redditor showed how they were able to load up on PS Plus Essentials subscriptions and then upgrade it to PS Plus Premium for just $199.

"Just wanted to share as I figure you guys would get a kick out of it," they added.

PS Plus Essential is $79.99 per year, meaning the 24-year ongoing membership would cost the Redditor $1,919.76.

However, Sony offered the player an 89% discount to upgrade to a Premium subscription and charged On_Reddit_In_Class $199.99 instead of $1,889.75, bringing the total sum to $2,119.75.

Sony increased the subscription prices of its PlayStation Plus service in September 2023, hiking up the PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers by $20 each for a 12-month membership.

"This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service," the company explained at the time.

Several major US telecoms firms hit by Chinese hackers, FBI says

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 08:29

A joint statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has claimed multiple major US telecom providers have been breached in what appears to be a coordinated attack by Chinese hackers.

The statement notes, “The U.S. Government is investigating the unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China.”

Not much is known about the attack, nor which telecom providers have been affected as the investigation is still ongoing. The Canadian government has also issued a warning on China’s widespread reconnaissance scans on Canadian domains, likely searching for vulnerabilities and gathering information.

Telecoms surveillance network breached

“After the FBI identified specific malicious activity targeting the sector, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) immediately notified affected companies, rendered technical assistance, and rapidly shared information to assist other potential victims,” the joint statement continued, further stating that “any organization that believes it might be a victim to engage its local FBI field office or CISA.”

Earlier in October 2024, a cyber criminal group with links to the People’s Republic of China tracked as Salt Typhoon managed to break into broadband providers such as AT&T, Lumen Technologies, and Verizon. Along with access to the network traffic processed by these providers, the attackers also broke into a telecommunications system used by authorities to legally surveil criminals using wiretaps and other techniques.

As for Canada, the statement issued by its government states multiple reconnaissance scans by China “have occurred throughout 2024” with organizations targeted including “Government of Canada departments and agencies, and includes federal political parties, the House of Commons and Senate.”

“They also targeted dozens of organizations, including democratic institutions, critical infrastructure , the defence sector, media organizations, think tanks and NGOs,” the statement said.

The Canadian government says these scans are not indications of compromise, but are done to map and explore Canada’s domain infrastructure searching for vulnerabilities and planning future attacks.

“It is the equivalent of someone walking around a building to see if there is an alarm or security camera, or trying the windows and doors to see which ones are unlocked. It is about gathering information in case they want to return to carry out a crime and figuring out the best way to do it,” the statement summarized.

The best way for organizations to protect themselves from reconnaissance mapping and future attacks is to ensure their devices run the latest operating systems and are protected against all known vulnerabilities. Organizations may also want to ensure they use multi-factor authentication, activity logging, and educate their employees on common attack vectors such as phishing.

The OnePlus 13 will be more waterproof than the iPhone 16 and Samsung Galaxy S24

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 08:17

The OnePlus 13 is almost here, and OnePlus seems keen to keep the hype for its latest flagship smartphone high by continuing to tease new specs and features ahead of its China launch on October 31.

The most recent reveal has seen OnePlus confirm that the OnePlus 13 will launch with a major advantage over nearly every other phone on the market – an IP69 rating.

In fact, the OnePlus 13 will launch with dual IP68 and IP69 ratings; the former means the phone will survive immersion in water, the latter means it can survive high-pressure jets of hot water, and both confirm total dust resistance with a vacuum seal.

Ingress Protection ratings are defined and issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission, and measure a device’s resistance to dust (the first number) and water (the second number).

The OnePlus 13 has been rated at the highest level in both categories, surpassing many of its IP68-rated competitors like the iPhone 16 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Google Pixel 9 Pro.

While we would generally recommend avoiding situations in which an IP69 rating is useful, it’s exciting to see a phone push the level of durability higher than the norm.

There are very few phones with an IP69 rating. Certain regional Oppo models boast it, but the OnePlus 13 will be the first IP69-equipped smartphone available to Western markets.

IP68 and IP69 ratings explained Image 1 of 3

A rating of 6 in dust protection – which signifies total dust-proofing with a vacuum seal – has been the standard in high-end consumer tech for a while now, but it's the improved water resistance that makes the OnePlus 13's ratings impressive.

A rating of 8 in water resistance means the OnePlus 13 can withstand immersion water more than a meter deep, though exactly how deep is up to the manufacturer. Android Authority reports that the OnePlus 13 will withstand a depth of 1.5m.

IP ratings for water resistance aren’t quite as sequential as they are for dust – hence the issuing of both IP68 and IP69 ratings – and a rating of 9 means the OnePlus 13 can survive high-pressure jets of 176°F water.

It’s worth remembering that these ratings should be primarily thought of as a defense against accidents and the elements. Exposing a phone to large amounts of dust or water may cause issues down the line and shouldn’t be a part of your daily usage, which is why we generally don’t test IP ratings as part of our review process.

The OnePlus 13 is right around the corner, and we expect to see a global launch early next year. For the latest official updates as we hear them, be sure to keep up with our OnePlus, Android, and general phones coverage.

These 'smart' glasses don't boast an AI assistant, but they can turn into sunglasses in an instant

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 08:00

From Project Orion to Snapchat Spectacles and X-Real Glasses with Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, which are likely stealing the show with the most adoption, there’s no shortage of contenders for the best smart glasses in 2024.

Rather than tossing a microphone or set of speakers into glasses, Chamelo is taking a more fundamental approach to take the hassle out of swapping glasses for sunglasses. Its new eyewear model, Prime, can automatically transition from glasses to sunglasses thanks to a light sensor built into the bridge.

This piece of tech, paired with the aptly named 'Autopilot' feature – not to be confused with Tesla’s self-driving mode – will automatically adjust the tint of the lenses based on the conditions you’re in. For instance, if you’re walking outside on a sunny fall day, the lenses might adjust to a higher tint to protect your eyes.

Pretty handy – and Chamelo promises that tint adjustment takes just 0.1 seconds. The proprietary Eclipse Tint-Adjustable lenses can be adjusted between four tint levels, from 9% to 45%. The lenses themselves offer 100% UV protection and come in two finishes: smoke, which looks like classic black shades, and Fire, which has an orange mirrored finish.

If you require prescription lenses, though, you’re out of luck for the moment. Chamelo doesn’t yet offer prescription lenses, and you can’t swap the lenses for off-the-shelf ones. However, the brand does plan to offer these additional lens types at some point.

The black frame is made of thermoplastic, specifically TR90, and weighs 30 grams, and the glasses offer protection against sweat or water up to the IPX4 standard. If you’d rather adjust the level of tint on your own, you can override the ‘Autopilot’ feature and manually swipe on the arm to change the tint across the four levels.

Chamelo’s Prime glasses – and sunglasses – are set to ship from December priced at $249 / £249 / AU$399. An international launch is planned, but the UK and Australia pricing isn’t yet available. If you’re in the United States and are already sold, you can lock in an order now at $199 after an instant $50 discount.

Some of the biggest password stealers around may have been disrupted by police

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 07:45

Two of the biggest infostealer malware strains around today have been hit by significant disruption by a major police operation.

The Dutch National Police engaged in Operation Magnus, together with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other unnamed partners, to take down RedLine and Meta.

In a website propped up for this occasion only, it says, “involved parties will be notified, and legal actions are underway.”

No patch yet

RedLine and Meta are widely known infostealers used by cybercriminals to harvest sensitive data from compromised systems. RedLine, often sold on underground forums, specializes in collecting credentials, cookies, and system information from browsers and applications, making it popular in phishing campaigns and botnets. Meta, emerging as a recent competitor, operates similarly by targeting login details, credit card information, and cryptocurrency wallets.

Both malware strains employ advanced evasion techniques to bypass antivirus detection, allowing attackers to extract valuable data without being easily detected. Their affordability and ease of use make them accessible to a range of threat actors, increasing the risk for individuals and businesses alike.

The Operation Magnus website also hosts a short video clip, explaining what happened.

“We gained full access to all Redline and Meta servers. Did you know that they’re pretty much the same?”, it was said in the video.

“This version of RedLine and Meta include unique insights in your data. Usernames, passwords, IP addresses, timestamps, registration date, and much more. All the RedLine and Meta source code. Including the license servers, REST-API-servers, panels, stealers, and Telegram bots.”

The clip concludes by stating that the law enforcement considers all RedLine and Meta users as VIPs, “where VIP means Very Important to the Police”, while showing a scrolling list with all the names of the infostealing users.

“We are looking forward to seeing you soon,” the police concluded. There has been no word of arrests, but there is a countdown timer on the site, suggesting that additional announcements will be made soon.

Apple has quietly given the M4 iMac some hidden upgrades –here are the ones you may have missed

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 07:25
  • Apple has made a handful of interesting changes to the M4 iMac
  • That includes upgrades to the iMac’s external display support
  • The device’s USB-C accessories have also spread to other Macs

After many months of speculation, Apple unveiled a new iMac yesterday, complete with the M4 chip. It became the first Apple computer to come loaded with this piece of silicon, but there were a few other interesting tidbits that you might have missed from the announcement.

For one thing, the M4 iMac is now the first Mac that can support an external display running an 8K resolution at a refresh rate of 120Hz. That’s a fantastic selling point for anyone who wants to work on an incredibly detailed monitor running at a buttery-smooth frame rate.

It’s easy to miss this detail – Apple didn’t mention it in the iMac’s press release, and it’s only really apparent from visiting the computer’s specs page. Interestingly, it doesn’t show up on Apple’s US website – there, the specs page says the iMac supports one 8K display at a 60Hz refresh rate.

But try it on other regional websites (such as Apple’s pages for Canada or the UK) and you’ll see 8K at 120Hz mentioned. It’s unclear if this is a typo on Apple’s part or if there really are regional differences in the new iMac’s external display support. We've asked Apple to confirm and will update this story when we hear back.

We’re hoping that you will actually be able to get 8K resolutions running at 120Hz on the new computer, as that would be a significant upgrade for Mac fans.

More display bonuses

Speaking of displays, the M4 iMac can support up to two external displays, providing you pick a model with a 10-core M4 chip. That’s a notable step up, as there aren’t many Macs that actually work with two external monitors.

The M3 MacBook Air and M3 MacBook Pro can support two external displays, but only when the laptop’s lid is closed. The 10-core iMac, though, has no restrictions to worry about. And when those connected monitors can each run at up to 6K resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, as Apple’s specs page indicates, that’s an awful lot of additional screen space you’ll be able to work with.

And there’s another lesser-known detail surrounding the M4 iMac that you might have missed. While it’s been well documented that the iMac’s accessories – the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad – now come with USB-C connectivity instead of Lightning, the same is also true of these peripherals when you order them with the Mac Pro.

You can see this for yourself when you go to order a Mac Pro – in the ‘What’s in the Box’ section at the bottom of the buy page, Apple says that the computer comes with a USB-C charging cable for its Magic peripherals.

All in all, the iMac has undergone a substantial update this month. Not only does it now come with Apple’s latest M4 chip, but Apple has outfitted it with new colors, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, a nano-texture glass option, and more.

With further announcements from Apple coming this week, including upgrades for the MacBook Pro and Mac mini, there’s more to watch out for in the next few days.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D pricing leaks from multiple retailers, and it could be bad news for PC gamers

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 07:03

The upcoming AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPU has been sighted on several different retailer sites ahead of its confirmed November 7 release - it’s not looking positive for gamers in terms of pricing.

Wccftech spotted one of the listings on a French retailer, PC21, that reveals the retail price of the processor in France will reportedly be €556.27 (€463.56 without tax) - a little over $600 / £460 / AU$910. A Lithuanian retailer, Inida, also listed the chip at €557.31, and this listing is still live at the time of writing (though it lacks an image, meaning that it’s almost certainly a mistake).

This is fairly close to its predecessor’s (the Ryzen 7 7800X3D) price, which launched in April 2023 starting at €530. Of course, the pricing details listed here should be taken with a grain of salt until the CPU’s official launch.

Wccftech claims it will be at least 20% more expensive in Europe, with the US MSRP ranging between $450 and $500. Of course, this doesn’t account for sales tax, which will vary depending on your state, but even assuming a generational price bump - the 7800X3D cost $449 in the US at launch - it’s certainly still going to end up cheaper for Americans. Gamers outside the US who may have anticipated an affordable price could be left out in the cold on what may be (according to previous leaks) the new best gaming CPU on the market.

Is there any good news for gamers?

On a positive note, it appears that the previous spec leak may hold some truth if these listings are accurate - PC21’s listing showcases a 5.2GHz max boost clock speed, which corroborates the existing leak. As we discussed when examining previous leaks, AMD’s marketing for the 9800X3D could be led by ‘Next-Gen 3D V-Cache’ reportedly present within the new chip.

It all depends on how much of an impact this rumored Next-Gen 3D V-Cache may have on the 8-core CPU. The 7800X3D processor remains one of the best options for serious gamers and streamers, and while its successor could overtake it, this shouldn’t sway you from opting for the current AM5 CPU - although waiting until Black Friday might be a wise move at this point.

It may also be worth noting that the RTX 5000 GPU series reveal is on the horizon from Nvidia, so it’s entirely possible that gamers planning to drop some serious cash on upgrading their rigs will want to snap up the 9800X3D regardless of price, since it could be the perfect companion to a new flagship graphics card!

Fastest RAM in the world – G.Skill sets new record with DDR5 memory overclocked in excess of a staggering 12,000MT/s

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:59

G.Skill has set a new DDR5 RAM overclocking record with some of its memory in an Asus ROG motherboard, hitting a jaw-loosening speed of 12,112MT/s.

The feat was achieved by professional overclocker Safedisk, using G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5 memory in an Asus ROG Maximus Z890 Apex motherboard (with a new Intel Core Ultra 9 285K flagship desktop CPU).

To blaze the RAM over that 12,000MT/s mark, you won’t be surprised to learn that exotic cooling was necessary – in this case liquid nitrogen.

This is a new world record overclock for memory frequency as recorded by HWBOT, and it’s another in a fresh set of overclocking achievements which have been ushered in by Intel’s new Arrow Lake, Core Ultra 200S, family of processors.

Analysis: Overclocking potential

Far from everything about the launch of Intel’s Arrow Lake chips has been rosy, but there are certainly performance highlights with the new desktop family – gaming aside – and indeed plenty of overclocking potential with the new Z890 motherboards and Core Ultra 200 CPUs (the initial releases of which are unlocked ‘K’ models).

We’ve seen a record overclock of 7.5GHz for the Core Ultra 9 285K processor, the work of another expert overclocker, Elmor (backed by a team, again at Asus, achieved using the same ROG Maximus Z890 Apex motherboard that we see here).

As for the previous DDR5 record, that was set four days back by Kovan Yang (with Kingston RAM, in an Arrow Lake PC with an MSI MEG Z890 Unify-X motherboard), and this new record pipped it by a couple of Megahertz. There’ll doubtless be an ongoing tussle for a bit mileage as more professional overclockers try their hands with Intel’s Core Ultra 200S platform.

Naturally, you won’t ever see speeds like 12,000MT/s in the real world – they can only be reached in short bursts with exotic cooling systems as noted – but DDR5 RAM is very fast in terms of real-world overclocking too.

A recent innovation in the memory world is CUDIMMs, which are memory modules which have their own clock driver, as opposed to relying on the system clock like traditional DIMMS – and this leads to better stability and overclocks. We’ve seen this system with V-color RAM sticks which were pushed to hit 9200MT/s, no liquid nitrogen required. Impressive.

Look away now if you're a personal trainer: Tech, data, and AI are forecast to be the biggest fitness trends of 2025

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:54

Every year the American College of Sports Medicine publishes its survey of worldwide fitness trends for the coming year. It predicts top 20 fitness trends in the U.S. and around the world, calling on a host of professionals and stakeholders from the fitness world.

2025’s trends have just dropped, and it’s going to be another massive year for wearable technology. The best smartwatches aside, however, there are some other big movers and shakers that point to a world of personalized, data-driven fitness in your pocket, and a worrying sign for personal trainers.

So which trends are in, and which are out? What are the mainstays of fitness for 2025, and what’s new and exciting? From a survey of personal trainers, coaches, students, researchers, medical professionals, and more, here are the top takeaways from the intersection of fitness and technology.

(Image credit: Future) Wearables are still on top

Wearable technology has been the number one trend in all but two of the last 10 years, and it’s another top spot for 2025. ACSM notes the field of wearable tech “is constantly advancing” and highlights the benefits of the best fitness trackers, smart rings, and more.

But not without issuing a warning, too. ACSM warns “more work is needed to improve concerns of validity, reliability, and data privacy.” Personal training will feature later, but the trends list encourages exercise pros to use wearable tech to support their clients. Interestingly, full-time personal trainers were the only group from the exercise professionals polled in the survey who didn’t list wearable tech as the top-ranked trend.

Mobile exercise apps have continued their surge from 20th in 2023, seventh in 2024, to finally number two in this year’s survey. ACSM reports that some 850 million fitness apps were downloaded by some 370 million users in 2023, and speculates that wearable technology could be fuelling the rise thanks to its complementary nature.

The survey praised the flexibility of mobile training apps, especially for novice exercisers. Indeed, many of the best fitness apps on the market can help you generate an entire workout plan, track your progress, help you with your form, and more. With the advent of AI in apps like the PUSH workout app, the power of these apps to adapt and offer customized training to individuals is greater than ever before

Data: the bold newcomer

New for 2024, data-driven technology appears at number seven for 2025, thanks to its power to help clients “understand the physiological responses to an exercise stimulus in real-time.”

As exercise professionals leverage metrics like sleep and heart rate variability in training and recovery, they can more readily adjust training in response to these conditions, making exercise safer, especially for people with cardiometabolic conditions.

On-demand exercise classes are back

On-demand exercise classes, which exploded during the pandemic, are back in the top 20 for the first time since 2022. Pre-recorded classes and videos like Apple Fitness Plus or Peloton provide great flexibility to their users because they can be accessed anytime, any place.

More broadly, the re-emergence of on-demand exercise classes could be a sign of the deepening desire for customers to take more control of their own fitness journey, choosing which classes to do and when on their own terms, rather than committing to a workout program at their local gym or the rigors of personal training.

Personal training has been a top 10 trend in the ACSM survey since 2007 but has fallen to 16 for 2025. While the body acknowledges it remains “critical” for those who want effective guidance, the proliferation of remote work and virtual fitness solutions (like those aforementioned classes) is reducing demand.

One suggested solution for personal trainers is integrating hybrid modalities, making personal training more adaptable, personalized, and effective. With the surge of data-powered, personalized, democratized fitness apps and wearables, could we be seeing a drop in the demand for one-to-one personal training? While you get the most personal experience possible from a personal trainer, it often requires significant time and financial commitments, as well as space and equipment.

There's no guarantee these trends will play out exactly as predicted by ACSM, but if they do, it could be the first wake-up call to an industry of fitness professionals who need to adapt to a changing, connected, and data-driven fitness future.

Meta is building an AI search engine – could it be the true Google rival we’ve been waiting for?

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:48

Meta is developing an AI search engine to replace Google and Microsoft in Meta AI. The search engine would give Meta AI chatbot answers without the need for an external source.

The Information reports “Meta hopes to lower its reliance on Google Search and Microsoft’s Bing, which currently provide information about news, sports and stocks to people using Meta AI, according to a person who has spoken with the search engine team.”

This news comes off the back of Meta AI’s new partnership with Reuters which allows users to get answers about news and current events from the latest Reuters reporting without leaving Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp.

Meta wants Meta AI to be self-sufficient, without the need to rely on other technologies to provide the best user experience possible. The development of an AI-powered search engine would be a huge step in this direction.

The Information states Meta’s spokesperson declined to comment, but considering Meta AI has more than 185 million weekly users, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Meta double down on its own technology to keep all that search traffic in-house.

An AI search revolution

AI search engines are growing in popularity with options such as Perplexity and Arc Search proving to be incredibly useful tools for searching the web. AI search engines differ from a regular Google search by compiling summaries based on search results and providing the end-user with links to original sources to further their research should they require.

If Meta does develop an AI search engine, we could see a genuine rival to Google’s own search as large companies start to move into the AI search engine space. OpenAI’s SearchGPT is rumored to launch before the end of the year, and now we're wondering if we could see Meta’s alternative before 2025 too?

The Pixel Watch 5 might get Google's custom Tensor chips – and that could be great for AI features

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:39

Google’s Pixel Watches could be set for a major chipset upgrade to Google’s own Tensor hardware, which could pave the way for the Google wearables to get significantly better AI features.

The Google Pixel Watch 3 is currently powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Plus Gen 1, which is a fine but aging 2022 chipset. According to leaked documents seen by Android Authority, this is set to change in 2026 with the release of the Google Pixel Watch 5 which will boast a Google-made Tensor chipset.

We don’t know too much about the specifics, but we expect it won’t be as sophisticated as the Tensor G6 that Google’s flagships phones will receive that year. However, with Google at the reigns, and with AI being a major focus of its efforts, we wouldn’t be surprised if it crammed in a few NPU cores to boost the Pixel Watch line’s onboard AI capabilities.

Onboard AI is generally seen as more private than AI which needs to send your data to the cloud for processing. Their power is more limited, but for sensitive health data – like what the Pixel Watch collects – the privacy afforded by onboard AI has some major advantages.

It could also mean that the Pixel Watch 5 could provide some AI-powered workout advice and health insights without needing a wireless connection – perfect if your run or bike ride takes you through a patch with low signal.

A while to wait

Beyond AI, an updated chipset could allow for faster processing for non-AI tools with a CPU upgrade, and tools to improve power efficiency such as an on-board modem.

This could help to extend the watch’s battery life, which would be ideal for sleep tracking and reducing how often it needs a recharge. However, as with all leaks we should take this report with a pinch of salt.

While a chipset refresh makes a lot of sense, the leaked document was dated from 2023. Since then, Google’s chipset plans could have changed, and even if they haven’t yet there’s a chance there’s still time for its plans to be altered before the expected Pixel Watch 5 release in 2026.

Microsoft claims Google is running "shadow campaigns" to discredit its cloud work in Europe

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:28

Microsoft Deputy General Counsel Rima Alaily has slated Google’s efforts to sway European regulators with the launch of the Open Cloud Coalition – a group of 10 cloud companies campaigning for a fairer and more competitive cloud landscape across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Alaily criticized Google for forming an “astroturf” lobbying group, which she says is part of the company’s broader attempt to undermine its competitors.

Moreover, Alaily claimed Google has organized the group as a front to discredit Microsoft’s business practices in Europe, which recently came under fire from antitrust regulators.

Microsoft accuses Google of running “shadow campaigns”

Alaily alleged Google has recruited smaller European cloud providers as the coalition’s public face to obscure its involvement and to shift regulatory focus from its own business practices, noting that the company has gone to great lengths to appear as a secondary member of the Coalition.

The group consists of international companies like Centerprise International, Civo and Gigas, and domestic companies such as ControlPlane, DTP Group, Prolinx, Pulsant, Clairo and Room 101.

Google Cloud might be the only hyperscaler in the group, but this isn’t uncommon. CISPE, a group of cloud companies operating in Europe, only has one resident hyperscaler – AWS.

Alaily’s blog post also points to Google’s failed efforts to get CISPE members to sustain their case against Microsoft. Google reportedly offered €470 million in favor of this, but the group ultimately decided to opt for Microsoft’s settlement.

She wrote: “By our count, there are at least 24 antitrust investigations against Google in the leading digital markets around the world. At a time when Google should be focused on addressing legitimate questions about its business, it is instead turning its vast resources towards tearing down others.”

The blog post adds Google has attacked Microsoft through other companies previously, noting, “We understand Google is a main funder of the U.S.-based Coalition for Fair Software Licensing, which has levied attacks on our cloud computing business in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the EU… Google has also attacked us on topics ranging from cybersecurity to our business in China, pitching stories to reporters, suggesting questions to congressional offices ahead of hearings, and distributing documents in major capitals around the world.”

A Google Cloud spokesperson told TechRadar Pro in an email: “We’ve been very public about our concerns with Microsoft’s cloud licensing. We and many others believe that Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices lock-in customers and create negative downstream effects that impact cybersecurity, innovation, and choice. You can read more in our many blog posts on these issues.”

Daredevil: Born Again reportedly leading a bumper 2025 for Marvel on Disney Plus as six more MCU TV shows could make their debuts

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 06:19

2025 could be a bumper year for Marvel's TV division, with the comic-book giant reportedly set to release up to seven new shows on Disney Plus.

Despite previous assertions that it would release less content every year, Marvel Studios is seemingly preparing to release a new series approximately every seven weeks (if my math is correct) from next January onwards.

Indeed, according to the file names on some new logo images uploaded to Disney's press image library yesterday (October 28) – as spotted by X/Twitter account Comicodigy and users on Reddit – 2025 looks like it'll be a very busy year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on the small screen.

Until recently, we knew that three new Marvel shows would debut on Disney's primary streaming service. The first of those, Daredevil: Born Again, is slated to arrive on March 4, 2025. Daredevil's standalone MCU series would be joined by two more projects later in 2025, with Ironheart and What If...? season 3 also confirmed to launch on undisclosed dates.

Marvel Studios has revealed the schedule for its 2025 television lineup:Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man — January 25Daredevil: Born Again — March 4Eyes of Wakanda — August 6Ironheart — September 3Marvel Zombies — OctoberWonder Man — December pic.twitter.com/ezHcXBgkCXOctober 29, 2024

Now, it appears that trio will be joined by four more series, three of which will be animated offerings. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, an animated Spider-Man TV show that won't be canon in the MCU, is rumored to be the first of those releases, with the show due to swing onto Disney Plus on January 29, 2025. Eyes of Wakanda, a four-part Black Panther animated anthology miniseries, is then expected to debut on August 6, 2025.

Marvel Zombies, a spin-off of Marvel Studios' first animated project What If...?, will reportedly launch in October 2025, which should make for a scarily fun Halloween watch. Finally, Wonder Man, a long-gestating live-action show starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, will arrive on one of the best streaming services in December.

If those release dates don't change it'll be an incredibly stacked year for Marvel overall. The comic titan is also preparing to release the final two Marvel Phase 5 movies – Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts – in February and May 2025 respectively. They'll be joined by The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July, which will kickstart the final phase of the Marvel Multiverse Saga.

Paying the production price

Thunderbolts could be one of 10 new MCU projects that will arrive in 2025 (Image credit: Marvel Studios)

If Marvel releases all of the aforementioned films and shows next year, fans will have no less than 10 new movies and TV series to consume in just 12 months. With some industry experts and MCU fans suggesting that the superhero market is already at saturation point, that's a lot of content for diehards and casual viewers to consume.

Of course, Daredevil: Born Again aside, Marvel hasn't officially outlined its 2025 release schedule yet. It's possible, then, that the Disney subsidiary will alter one or more of its TV show launch dates to space them out, or even shift them from next year entirely.

For what it's worth, I'm not convinced that Marvel will release seven new shows in 2025. As I mentioned, it wants to rein in how many projects it releases annually, so bringing out seven new series in a 12-month period would very much go against that plan. With numerous other Disney Plus projects, including new Star Wars shows like Andor season 2, expected to debut next year, too, Disney won't want its biggest franchises to cannibalize each others' viewing figures by battling for audience attention.

Regardless, the fact that the MCU may get 10 new productions next year is a by-product of Marvel's haphazard creative approach in recent years. Rather than focus on telling a cohesive multiverse-centric story across Phases 4, 5, and 6, the studio's desire to pump out projects with little to no overarching plan has led to audience apathy and dented its reputation.

Yes, there have been extenuating circumstances, with the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a worldwide pandemic impacting development on numerous productions. Nonetheless, the disorganized nature of Marvel's Multiverse Saga plan is now coming back to bite it. If Marvel moves ahead with its apparent objective to release seven new shows in 2025, I fear viewers may get overwhelmed with the amount of options on offer, or lose interest – if they haven't already – in the MCU for good.
