Astonishing audio, clever cancelling and a fit that won't quit: why you'll love Bose's amazing new earbuds

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 11:11

If you're looking for the perfect pair of earbuds, we know where to look. The new Bose QuietComfort Earbuds at John Lewis deliver exceptional audio, state of the art noise cancelling and all-day comfort. These are incredible earbuds with legendary sound and cutting-edge features– but they don't come with a hefty price tag. These are the most affordable QuietComfort Earbuds ever, and if you're looking for the ultimate everyday earbuds for music, movies, podcasts and more, we think you've just found the perfect pair.

Make every day sound epic

Bose have won tons of awards for the epic sound of their headphones, and these earbuds are no exception: they deliver Bose's incredible, iconic sound and combine it with cutting-edge noise cancellation to remove unwanted audio and get you closer to the music than ever before. And with up to 8.5 hours of go-with-the-flow stamina they'll soundtrack even the biggest adventures.

The world can wait

One of our very favourite technologies is active noise cancellation, ANC for short: it listens to the world around you and removes all of the sounds you don't want to hear so you can focus on your music, your movie, your game or your podcast and hear even the tiniest details with incredible clarity.

Bose knows a thing or two about noise cancelling: they were making the world's very first active noise cancelling headphones more than 20 years ago, and they've been leading the field ever since. When it comes to keeping the outside world quiet, the new QuietComfort Earbuds are state of the art silencers.

Soundtrack your epic adventures

The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds have serious stamina: in addition to that superb 8.5-hour battery life their case can recharge them a further two and a half times before it's time for a top-up. You can do that with wired or with wireless charging, because the case works with both.

There's good news for UK wearers too: the QuietComfort Earbuds are IPX4 rated for water resistance, so no amount of splashes, drips or sprays on rainy days will hold you back.

(Image credit: Bose) Even better Bluetooth

One of the most important features of the QuietComfort Earbuds is one you won't notice: because they have Bluetooth 5.3 they deliver a solid, strong and continuous connection to ensure that you hear beats drop, not audio drop-outs. And that strong connection is long-distance, with a range of 9m. That's not all. There's Bluetooth multipoint too, enabling you to switch instantly between your laptop, your phone and your other devices with ease. And thanks to the customisable tap settings for playing, pausing, skipping songs and upping the volume, you're always in complete control of your audio, no matter what you're listening to.

As unique as your ears

The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds makes your buds truly personal. The Bose QCE app includes a five-band adjustable EQ to get the sounds they way you want them, dialling in as much bass, mid-range and treble as you like – so you can make your music big on bass, incredibly airy, or both. The app enables you to switch between ANC settings and go from Quiet to Aware and Off. And you can customise the controls and manage your connected devices too. With the Bose QCE app you can control every aspect of your audio experience to make your QuietComfort Earbuds uniquely yours.

The new Bose QuietComfort Earbuds bring Bose's legendary noise cancelling technology and superb sound together with state of the art Bluetooth for rock-solid connections, instant switching between your different devices, all day battery life and incredible comfort. Not only that, but they're available at an incredible price that means even more people can enjoy all the benefits of Bose's audio expertise.

The new Bose QuietComfort Earbuds are the perfect partner for your music, podcasts and more. And John Lewis is the perfect place to buy them: its customer service is as legendary as Bose's audio, its experts are always on hand to help you find the perfect product and its famous Never Knowingly Undersold promise ensures that you'll always get a great price too.

Software developers targeted by malware hidden in Python packages

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 11:08

Python developers working on Mac devices are being targeted by North Korean hackers once again experts have warned.

A report from cybersecurity researchers Unit 42 has claimed the attacks are, at least to some extent, part of the so-called Operation Dream Job, run by Lazarus Group, an infamous hacking collective on North Korea’s payroll. It revolves around creating fake job ads and luring software developers to apply. During the hiring process, the crooks would trick the devs into downloading and running malicious packages, thus granting the attackers access to important resources.

In this instance, the criminals were observed uploading weaponized Python packages to PyPI, one of the world’s most popular Python package repositories.

PondRAT

So far, the researchers identified four packages, which were subsequently reported and removed from the platform:

real-ids (893 downloads)
coloredtxt (381 downloads)
beautifultext (736 downloads)
minisound (416 downloads)

These packages were allegedly holding a piece of malware called PondRAT. This remote access trojan is a stripped-down version of POOLRAT (also known as SIMPLESEA), a known macOS backdoor that Lazarus was observed deploying in the past.

PondRAT can’t do all the things POOLRAT can, but it can still upload and download files, run arbitrary commands, or even stop working for a while.

"The evidence of additional Linux variants of POOLRAT showed that Gleaming Pisces has been enhancing its capabilities across both Linux and macOS platforms," Unit 42 said. Gleaming Pisces, Unit 42 claims, is a sub-group of Lazarus.

"The weaponization of legitimate-looking Python packages across multiple operating systems poses a significant risk to organizations. Successful installation of malicious third-party packages can result in malware infection that compromises an entire network."

For months now, Lazarus has been creating fake job ads, attempting to compromise developers working in high-profile organizations. It was also seen trying to get hired by these firms, too.

Sony reveals two new Inzone monitors, one for PlayStation just in time for the PS5 Pro and another for competitive PC gaming

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 11:00

Sony has unveiled two new additions to the Sony Inzone line of gaming monitors, the Inzone M9 II and and the Inzone M10S.

Both models represent a departure from the white, PlayStation-like aesthetic that has come to characterize the brand since its inception. The Inzone M9 II, a successor to the existing Sony Inzone M9, has a sleek black look with a redesigned monitor stand.

The new stand, which has a thin rounded base, now allows for a 360 degree rotation which would be perfect if you need to quickly adjust your display position or swap out cables from the back. The Inzone M9 II also has an improved tilt range compared to its predecessor too, allowing for adjustment by up to 30 degrees rather than 20.

The level of Height adjustment available has also been enhanced, with 13cm of adjustment compared to just 7cm. I saw this model back at Gamescom 2024 and was very impressed by the versatility of the overall design, especially compared to the more limited, tripod-like base of the original. Sony also claims that the display in-built speakers have been overhauled, though I’m eager to spend more hands-on time with the monitor before coming to a definitive conclusion as to whether they are that much better.

Changes have also been made to the specs of the 27-inch IPS panel itself, which is at the same 4K resolution but has a higher 160Hz refresh rate. Best of all, these improvements come alongside a price cut, taking the monitor from $899.99 / £999 to $799.99 / £899.

Although still quite expensive, it looks like a great fit for PS5 gaming, especially if you intend to pick up a PS5 Pro, and could very well rank among some of the best monitors for PS5 when it releases.

The second model revealed, the Inzone M10S, has been designed with competitive PC gaming in mind. Created in collaboration with esports giant Fnatic, this £1,199 / $1,099.99 model offers a 27-inch OLED display with a remarkable 480Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms grey-to-grey (GtG) response time.

Paired with an even thinner, but still very versatile, base and a well-designed stand, you have an absolute dream for competitive shooters like Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant. I’ve been using the monitor for awhile now and have had a great experience, detailed in our new Sony Inzone M10S review.

Despite being designed primarily for PC gaming, the Inzone M10S still features an automatic PS5 mode for console play.

Trust me – there's one Apple Intelligence feature you'll want to turn off right away

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 10:59

I’ve been using Apple Intelligence on my iPhone 16 Pro Max for nearly a week now and overall it's been a great experience. From Writing Tools that help you to quickly format text (creating tables is seriously useful), to Clean Up, which removes unwanted objects from photos, Apple Intelligence truly feels like the next generation of iOS, and that’s exciting.

I do have one issue with the iOS 18.1 public beta, however, and while the feature in question is a pain, it points towards a bigger issue that seriously needs addressing before the official launch in October.

So what exactly is getting on my nerves? Well, Apple Intelligence loves summaries, and most of the time they're actually pretty good. Having Apple Intelligence summarize an article, for example, is a great way to see if you want to read the whole thing before committing to it. It's also handy for emails, where you often want to get to the core of the information quickly, condensing the subject into a single line so you know if you should click in or not.

When it comes to summarizing any form of instant messaging, however, it’s one of the weirdest and most dystopian things I’ve ever encountered on an iPhone. Seeing Apple Intelligence streamline my friends and family members’ messages into single lines of text that have a robotic tone freaks me out a little, especially considering that seven out of 10 times it gets the point of the messages completely wrong.

Essentially, Apple Intelligence reads multiple messages for you and summarizes them into a single notification on your lock screen. From there you can get a glance at a message’s contents without opening the chat and reading a wall of text. It’s an intriguing concept that if done right could be brilliant, but in its current state it just feels like cheap generative AI taking over your friends’ personalities.

Notification summaries for messages often can’t understand the difference between a statement and a question, leading to confusing notifications on my Lock Screen. In that sense, it misses the mark in what it’s trying to achieve by not even making your life easier, instead forcing you to click notifications to read the original messages to get the gist of things. Everyone has their own way of writing, and Apple Intelligence’s inability to perceive and adapt the summaries to tone of voice makes me feel uneasy whenever I get multiple messages in from someone I know very well, like my girlfriend.

Thankfully you can turn the feature off – more on that below, but for me its existence poses a bigger question, and one which I’ve been thinking about a lot recently as more iPhone owners than ever finally get to use on-device AI: will we all just start sounding the same? Will everyone start using Writing Tools to tell their loved ones how much they mean to them? Will communication evolve to a point where it's just two people sending Smart Replies to each other? I digress, but you get the idea: Apple Intelligence, and more specifically these notification summaries, are creeping me out.

Please make this easier, Apple

While you can turn these summaries off, how you do this is not immediately obvious. The only option under the Apple Intelligence settings is one for turning Apple Intelligence on or off entirely. Instead you need to go into Notifications settings, where you can switch off notification summaries.

This opens up a different discussion: why are Apple Intelligence settings so hard to find and why can’t Apple just list all features inside the Apple Intelligence settings panel for users to decide themselves? There should be a list of all of Apple Intelligence’s AI-powered tools in one settings panel. so you can just toggle off whatever you want to use. Many users who get their hands on Apple Intelligence for the first time next month will have issues finding where to turn off and tweak each feature, but it shouldn’t be this hard – just put them under Apple Intelligence settings.

In this instance, I’m not against notification summaries; I’m against notification summaries in their current form. So while at some point I’ll probably use Apple Intelligence to condense my pings, at the moment I just want to turn them off.

Now that I know I can turn them off by finding the settings nestled into iOS, I’ve decided to opt out of being Apple Intelligence’s test rat when it comes to my day-to-day interactions. If, however, Apple’s AI starts to learn from tone of voice and understand sarcasm a bit better then I’ll be open to trying it out again.

This hidden iOS 18 feature turns your iPhone calculator into an easy currency converter

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 10:27

iOS 18 brings major upgrades to core iPhone apps including Messages, Photos, and Maps, but arguably one of the most useful improvements comes to your iPhone’s built-in calculator.

Before, the Calculator app was just a calculator (albeit a basic and scientific one), but in iOS 18, it doubles as a conversion tool for converting units and currencies, which should make questions like “can I afford to spend €100 on these shoes?” easier to answer.

If, say, you want to know what five British pounds equates to in US dollars, you simply enter the number 5 into the number field (as if you were inputting a mathematical sum), tap the calculator icon in the bottom left corner of the screen, select the Convert toggle, then choose the currency of your choice. Et voilà! Now you know that £5 is too much to spend on an Iced Matcha Latte from Blank Street Coffee (even if you are in London).

To convert units, tap the currency acronym, then scroll along to find your desired unit. Repeat that step for the bottom figure, and you’re good to go.

Here’s a TikTok explaining the above in visual terms:

Incidentally, the Calculator app now also features a toggle for Math Notes (respectfully branded as Maths Notes in the UK), which allows you to pencil in equations, assign variables, plot graphs, and draw diagrams. Your iPhone will solve said equations inline when you write or type an equals sign, so as well as being a currency converter for your pocket, the iPhone Calculator is a useful homework companion in iOS 18, too.

MoneyGram systems shut down following "cybersecurity issue"

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 10:27

MoneyGram has said it is experiencing a “cybersecurity issue” that has forced it to shut down parts of its IT infrastructure.

The incident seems to have started on Friday, when customers first started complaining about the service not being operational. The company posted its first announcement on X on Sunday, saying it was experiencing a network outage, but in replies to the tweet, the customers slammed the company for “waiting this long to admit there is a problem.”

A day later, MoneyGram gave more details, saying it identified a “cybersecurity issue”, which forced it to take parts of its IT infrastructure offline, launch an investigation, and bring in external cybersecurity experts and law enforcement. The company did not clearly state if this was a ransomware attack, and no ransomware operators have assumed responsibility for the attack yet.

Money stuck in the void

At press time, the company’s website was still offline, holding only a short message saying “We're busy updating the website. Please check back soon.”

MoneyGram also did not say which services it had to bring down, but since customers from all over the world are complaining, it’s safe to assume that online transactions are not working. The Register reports that in-person payments are also not operational.

There is currently no ETA on when the company might bring its services back online. If similar incidents elsewhere are any indication, it could take up to a week to restore at least some systems.

MoneyGram is a hugely popular solution, with more than 150 million customers worldwide. And by being a payments processor, it is a prime target for cybercriminals. If crooks managed to steal sensitive data from the company, it could spell trouble for many people.

How to watch the PlayStation State of Play tonight - plus rumors and what we can expect

TechRadar News - Tue, 09/24/2024 - 10:17

Sony's latest PlayStation State of Play broadcast is almost here, which will hopefully provide us with a new look at some brand-new titles as well as a fresh look at the PS5 Pro.

To prepare for the showcase, here's everything you need to know, including how and when to watch, what to expect, and some predictions for the showcase we might have.

Start time

Sony's State of Play is scheduled to broadcast tonight on September 24 at 11pm BST / 3pm PT / 6pm ET and September 25 at 12am CEST / 7am JST.

State of Play returns tomorrow!Watch live at 3pm PT on September 24 for news and updates on over 20 titles: https://t.co/TL29c6AbpZ pic.twitter.com/RV71SC2eseSeptember 23, 2024

Where to watch

You'll be able to watch the State of Play broadcast on PlayStation's official YouTube and Twitch channels. As with every showcase, we can expect there to be a countdown before the live stream's scheduled start time of up to 10 minutes.

What to expect

Sony has confirmed that tonight's State of Play showcase will be 30+ minutes and will provide "news and updates on more than 20 upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games from studios around the world."

In terms of what those games are, we now have leaked confirmation that Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered will be announced alongside a gameplay trailer.

The remastered versions of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 were leaked on PSN earlier today and will be coming to PS5 and PS4 on December 10 to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary.

Although it hasn't been verified at this time, there's strong reason to believe that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC will also be officially revealed after a recent leak on the ESRB website, as well as a Days Gone remaster.

Following the PS5 Pro announcement, and with PS5 Pro pre-orders set to begin this week as well, tonight's State of Play could potentially feature future titles for the mid-generation console and some overview of the boost in performance they'll get from the new hardware.

Some titles that could make an appearance range from Marvel's Wolverine, which has been quiet for a few years now since its 2021 reveal, to Kojima Productions' Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which has a 2025 launch window.

We could also see brand-new titles in development for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, but we'll have to wait and see.
